Shopping for Fruits and Vegetables

By , About.com Guide

It is hard to go wrong when selecting produce items for low calorie cooking. Most are low in calories and loaded with nutrients. Canned and frozen items can be stored for a long period of time, but you may need to do a little menu planning before selecting fresh produce items so that you are sure you will use them before they spoil. Also, select a rainbow of colors in your produce as each color group contains a similar and unique set of nutrients.

Fresh Produce Items:

Lettuces and spinach, whole tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms, onions herbs and garlic for flavoring, carrots, white or sweet potatoes, apples, bananas, oranges, peaches pears, grapes, and berries when in season.

Frozen Items

Corn, peas, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, and berries.

Dried Items

Many dried items are useful for flavoring dishes. Select all varieties of herbs, onions, raisins, and cherries.

Canned Items

Tomatoes (diced, crushed, sauced) have a myriad of uses in soups, chili, pastas, and sauces. Also include green beans, beets, corn, mushrooms, unsweetened applesauce, peaches, pears, mandarin oranges, and pineapple (canned in fruit juice).
