Shopping for Fats and Oils

By Kimberley Eggleston, About.com

Ounce for ounce, any type of fat or oil (in its natural form) will contain the same amount of calories. For example, and ounce of olive oil and a ounce of lard has the same number of calories. However, the olive oil is far healthier for you than the lard. Fats and oils will be used in small amounts in low calorie cooking, but choosing certain ones will be healthier for you.

Oils

Olive oil and canola oil are my top choices for cooking and baking. Don't forget the non-stick cooking spray (a very small amount of fat) to prevent food from sticking to your cookware.

Fats

A small amount of butter for flavoring is my choice for cooking and baking.
